3 out of 5 stars product good, price bad, shipping bad   May 1, 2010
former Amazon user
The product I purchased was exactly what it was supposed to be. The price I paid Amazon, however, was a 200% markup from what they paid the company that sent it to me. I understand making a profit, but this is ridiculous. Shipping also took much longer than the website advertised. The 3-5 working days promised turned into an actual 15 calendar days, meaning the item arrived long after I needed it. Book, good. Amazon, not good.

4 out of 5 stars Marzano's Nine   May 1, 2010
Kim Mastropietro
Classroom Instruction That Works by Robert Marzano et al is a really good resource for teachers - old and new. I only wish that there were more examples of specificly how to use these strategies.

5 out of 5 stars Great but borrow it   April 27, 2010
Karen (kalamazoo, michigan)
This book was amazing but could have all been summarized by a table in the first chapter stating the most effective strategies and their effect sizes. This information is needed by every teacher, but as the whole book can be summarized in one table, you may want to borrow it.

1 out of 5 stars Marzano lacks understanding of statistics   April 27, 2010

In the first chapter of Marzano's book he talks about the statistical methods he used to support his beliefs. At the end of that chapter he mentions that he has acknowledged "all the limitations of this book." He neglects to mention any of the more well known problems with his approach. Perhaps his understanding of the limitations would have been better if he had looked at the Wikipedia page on meta-analysis. Here is a brief summary of the problems. 1) Good meta-analysis of badly designed studies results in bad statistics. Educational studies are notoriously badly designed. 2) Studies which get no results do not get published, so it is impossible to know how many studies have been done which got no results. Thus, this cannot be factored into the presumed effect size. 3) The decision to include or reject a study in the meta-analysis is subjective.

Alfie Kohn's devastating critique of the Marzano book is a must read for anyone interested in the supporting evidence behind Marzano's beliefs. In ABUSING RESEARCH: THE STUDY OF HOMEWORK AND OTHER EXAMPLES (Phil Delta Kappan, September 2006) Kohn looks at the same research and reaches the opposite conclusion about the value of homework for children below the age of fifteen.

If you are interested in a good book on this topic I would recommend TEACH LIKE A CHAMPION by Doug Lemov.

This book arrived in great condition, like new. The book itself is well-written, but really has no new information for experienced teachers. For a new teacher, it has good ideas and techniques for presenting materials to students.
