I enjoyed reading it! August 19, 2010 Flushnasty This book doesn't go very deep on many of the issues, but its really enjoyable to read. If you've never taken a sociology class before, you will probably learn more than a few interesting things!
Rather Simplistic July 15, 2010 Anomaly 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
In comparison to other introductory texts that I've read, this one provides a rather simplistic overview. As another reviewer said, it may give the very basic information, but it does little to encourage critical thought. The boxes containing real-world examples take up a large part of the textbook. Should they be removed, the already short book may be cut down to nearly half the length. For the ~$80 I paid for this textbook, I'm not very impressed.
Love it!! July 11, 2010 drivera89 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved this book!! I used it for my intro to soc class my first quarter of school. Henslin does a great job of explaining theories and terms in a way that the reader can understand. He also has a great way of keeping the reader interested in what is being said through different examples, charts, and pictures! This is a great book!!
Awesome! July 9, 2010 shannon 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered my text book about 4 days before my class and was worried I wasn't going to get it in time. The shipping said about 7 days. My book arrived in excellent condition the day before class. Thank you. I love the whole smooth process and I hope my future book are available through the same seller. I love Amazon!
Sociology: And we really mean just the essentials June 10, 2010 J. Masopust 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently received this text book from my local library and as a sort of textbook bibliophile, I must admit, I am not impressed. This is the third sociological text book I have skimmed through and it stands as the least of them. To spare you the time of reading a lengthy review I will only say this: while the content brings a fairly basic overview of the fundamental terms and concepts of sociology, the analyses and examples used will rarely challenge the reader think critically of the text and therefore will not lead to truly obtaining the sociological perspective. Personally, I have found several of the interpretations of sociological constructs to be highly generalized and presumptuous, as though the authors assume sociological questions are already known and fully understood.
If you are simply looking for a little bit of light reading to overview the basic concepts of sociology, than this text will probably get the job done. However, if you are in need of a text for the classroom, or one that has a more in depth analysis, I would advise that you look elsewhere.
