It worked for me August 26, 2010 James Ware 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm an independent contractor. I need certifications to establish credibility with my customers. Without it, I'm just another geek and who knows if I know what I'm talking about.
I don't have a huge company behind me with a big training budget. It comes out of my own pocket.
I used this book to prepare for the A+ exam and passed it on the first try.
Don't expect a thrilling read. It's workman like and to the point. You will be tempted to skip over sections that you think that you know well. Read through them anyway. You might learn a new trick or two.
The book IS NOT magic. Getting the certification takes some time and effort but the ExamCram book works.
My A+ certification cost me $30 for the book, a few nights without watching bad television (which I would give up for free) and the $180 fee for taking the exam.
Grand total = $210. That's hard to beat.
Great read for experienced users!!! August 25, 2010 jstsu24 The book itself is a great cram read for Comptia A+ exam, because it does touch upon the material that will be covered, but I recommend video tutorials for those who are new to the computing technology. Supplementing this reading with video tutorials from either transignal or cbt nuggets, you will definitely pass the exam. For those who have doing IT for more than 2 years, this book is just fine.
A+ Preparation MUST August 22, 2010 Ruben Flood Although I have not yet taken CompTIA A+ exam, I can say I am very satisfied with what I have read and studied so far from this book. This book has a lot of detailed information cramed into a relatively small package. If nothing else, it has certainly given me the confidence to take on the high priced CompTIA A+ exam.
An Excellent Resource - But know what you are buying. August 13, 2010 Matt 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent resource and it helped me considerably to pass my A+ exams.
The author explains things very clearly with excellent visual aides and examples.
I would offer one word of caution. This is an exam cram intended for someone who already has the general knowledge covered in the A+ Objectives. If you come into it without that experience, this book doesn't go into enough detail on all of the subjects to fully prepare you.
One minor black mark. I found one error in the software practice tests. The book had the correct information, but the test gave the wrong answer. I researched the item to make sure of this.
It says this right in the introduction.
I started out without much background in many of the objectives, so I paired this with the Sybex book on the subject. They worked very well together as the Sybex book covered items in detail, whereas this book provided much more accurate and easy to understand information.
As a combination, these two resources work very well together. That said, if I could go back, I would have just bought the full version cert guide by David L Prowse.
I am going to start looking for his material specifically for future study material.
If you need to pass the exam, get this book! July 10, 2010 R. Reed (Omaha, NE USA) If you've got some level of experience (personal or professional) with installing, configuring, and troubleshooting PC hardware and Windows (XP/Vista), this is the perfect book to get you to prep for and more importantly, pass the A+ Exam the first try. If you don't have any of that experience, this book is still helpful, but I'd recommend practicing (ie. building a PC, installing/configuring a Windows OS, etc.) alongside reading through the book to see first hand the material being covered.
I travel quite a bit for work so I gave myself about 30 days to prep for the A+ Exam using this book. While reading, I made some notes in places I felt I needed to focus more time on. During that final weekend, I spent the time doing both practices tests in the back of the book and the tests on the included CD. By the way, the practice tests on the CD are presented just like the real exams. I retook those four practice tests until I scored 90% or better and then took the actual exams that following Monday. I passed both scoring 80%+ on each exam. Now on to Network+.
Overall, the author offers a great game plan to prep for the objectives covered on the exam and then prep you for possible exam questions. In my own experience, I'd say 99% of the practice test answers were correct. Thinking back, I probably found 1 (possibly 2 at the most) on the CD exam that gave incorrect answers to its respective question(s). But of course you'd know the CD was giving you the wrong answer if you had the knowledge, right?
Highly recommended!
