Product Description

Most would agree that American democracy thrives when citizens are informed and responsive. So how best to teach today s students not only how government works, but also why it works and maybe, more importantly, why it doesn t always work?

Hudson provides the perfect supplement for those who want to elicit a more critical look at the functioning of our political system. He outlines eight major challenges facing America as a new president takes office, ranging from the strength of the judiciary to the trade-offs between national security and personal privacy. Challenging students to respond robustly to these challenges, he also offers possible solutions to each. The end result is to provide a sound conceptual framework for evaluating the American political system one that stimulates analytical thinking and discussion.

Timely updates examine elections and voting specifically primaries and how they work, machine politics, and voting restrictions and the national security state, with a focus on the Bush administration s expansion of presidential power, as well as questions of spreading democracy abroad and the rationale for international intervention.

This book does a great job at exposing some of the serious structural problems that threaten the future of democracy in the U.S. I highly recommend it for students and scholars of the American political system.

1 out of 5 stars Flawed from the start   July 1, 2009

As a professor of political science, there's just no way I'd ever assign this book. Consider the title, and the fact that the book makes very little reference to America being designed not as a democracy at all but as a republic. The other major flaw is that I find it unbelieveable that eight perils to American democracy could be put forth and that there is apparently no reference to voter fraud. We're having more votes cast than there are voters in many precincts. Now THAT is a threat to American democracy. I recommend this book for the shredder.

I am a college student at Temple University and I had to read this book for my political science class. I thought this book was very well thought out and persuasive. In the book, Hudson explains eight reasons why America falls short of being a true democracy.

I learned very much from this book and I suggest it to somebody who wants to learn about the United States' democratic system and how it could work better!
